Oliver Heritage Issue #115 June/July 2023

  • FEATURING: Oliver 950.  When thoughts turn to the 900 series tractors, little recognition is given to the 950. While this unit didn’t have that infamous GM bark, it did carry the well-known Oliver/Waukesha engine, and for many that was good enough. The 990 will outnumber the 950 five to one at shows and events, yet nearly the same quantities of each were built. But, as time marches on, the 950’s attendance is returning to its rightful place in the 900 series lineup. Feature tractor owner: Steve Wall - Sorento, IL.
  • The Spokesmen of White: Selling Power. White’s marketing team wanted to throw a little extra punch into your purchase, and so they enlisted some high-profile characters to represent the company throughout the years including Neil Armstrong, Mike Ditka, and Elmer Fudd.
  • Oliver No. 26 and 38 Grain Drills:  When American Seeding was acquired by the Oliver Farm Equipment Company in 1929, it brought with it a line of Superior equipment that gave the company a full line.
  • Another Oliver User: Rodger Jorges. Like many a rural kid, Rodger grew up as a teen wrestling hay bales with his buddies during summer vacations from school. “There were a bunch of us boys around the same age from our neighborhood who got to be known for being good workers. Word got around that we could really move the hay bales. That was music to the local farmers’ ears.”
  • Cletrac Facts: When the Oliver OC-9 and OC-96 crawlers were introduced in 1959, they were all-new machines and much different than any Oliver had ever produced.
  • Bo Schmitt's Winning Super 88:  We see a lot of very nice tractors, both original and restored, at shows and posted on social media, so it takes a certain “wow factor” to get our attention. When high school student Bo Schmitt of Mount Pleasant, Texas, shared a photo of his Oliver Super 88 on Facebook, it wasn’t just us, but the entire Oliver world, that nodded in approval.
  • Jeff Ruff:  Like many family farms across the United States, the Ruff Century Farm of Franklin, Minnesota, has been passed down from one generation to the next. Today, Jeff Ruff operates the original land of that fertile Renville County soil that his father and grandfather once worked during their lifetimes.
  • Collector's Corner: Dan Robinette's Scale Model Olivers.
